Ex-sales here, who left two years ago, with some advice for those newly outside Microsoft.
1. LEARN SOMETHING ELSE. I recently saw a comment about the difficulty of hiring Windows Admins, because all the young guys are using Linux. That comment applies right across the stack. C++, Python, whatever instead of C#. PostgreSQL instead of SQL Server. Linux instead of Windows. Rather than being seen as a store of deep expertise, you need to demonstrate that you're not just a one-trick (Microsoft) pony.
2. LEARN TO SELL. Microsoft has been too dominant, for too long, and its sales force has become soft and lazy. To succeed outside Microsoft you need to prospect new accounts and compete with incumbent vendors. No more order taking (true-ups) from a few MAL accounts.
3. LEARN TO WORK. You built up a lot of bad habits at Microsoft, probably doing less than 2-3 hours of real work each day. You need more hours of face time with more customer executives, especially in the business, and that means you can't spend your time in Outlook and Lync.
4. LEARN TO TEAM. You're going to be distrusted in your new company. Everyone knows about the snake pit created by the rating system and cronyism, and they'll be wary that you'll bring it with you. Work with your colleagues, not against them.
5. ENJOY FREEDOM. Buy an Android phone, or an iPad, or a MacBook. Install Linux Mint on your home PCs. See what you've been missing all these years. Get the experiences your customers are having, and finally understand why they grew distant from you.
little off topic but, MS hasn't gotten any of my money and many others a while because of products going down hill, anyone feel like naming the person(s) who are responsible for wrecking Visual studio staring with VS2012 on up? if anyone deserves to go it them!

...not that I usually like moderation, but the signal to noise ratio in the main thread was seriously getting out of hand. Blogger needs some better filtering mechanisms. Slashdot might have the right idea - if you're looking for only "insightful" or "funny" comments, you'd be able to. If you're pissed that someone just wasted 30 seconds of your life, you can save someone else the wasted life.
So much of the original thread was Sad ,and lots of offensive along with plain weird mixed in with the informative. a little humors not gonna kill anyone!
I like to hear screwed up Visual studio post 2012, if their are any insiders who haven't been turn off by now.
Moderation kills discussion ... look at the main thread no longer discussing. Basically i would say being uncivilized on forums is better as it allows people to vent in this bad phase. venting is not bad, i am an Indian and all the racial tension against Indians is not bothering me, it just gives me a better perspective of the reality and allows us to understand these issues better. Moderation for removing names makes sense, it would be unwise for folks to put names of anyone.
"add me to the list of guys who hooked up with a msft indian wife. petite and tight and took my cock well. she didn't swallow so i'll never forget the massive load i delivered to her face and hair, and it was really hot how my batter contrasted with her skin. so don't overlook that and give it a shot. i did and she took it well."

It is fun and games till Bubba takes this shit literally and molests your Indian wife in your suburban neighborhood. We live in the Northwest to get away from this kind of racial hate.
Random race war isn't real discussion either. It's actually kind of cool to both have the main thread and this unmoderated crf part. Go to the main branch for serious stuff, come to the side branch to waste your time xD
Why no layoffs in what used to be OSD. Windows has big cuts and makes tons of money. Bing/MSN/ADS still losing money but no layoffs? Groups where Satya came from have minimal (C+E, ASG). Nokia to 0 made more sense as I doubt it will every show a profit.

I'll start. I took my kid to swimming lessons yesterday at an eastside swim facility and I was astounded by the complete lack of social grace demonstrated by the Indian people. Look, nobody has time to worry about mass killings when they can't find their phone charger. It's not like you can save the world when your phone is out of batteries.

People often respond to rejection by seeking inclusion elsewhere. “If your sense of belonging and self-esteem have been thwarted, you’ll try to reconnect”. Excluded people actually become more sensitive to potential signs of connection, and they tailor their behavior accordingly. “They will pay more attention to social cues, be more likable, more likely to conform to other people and more likely to comply with other people’s requests”.
Yet others may respond to rejection with anger and lashing out. If someone’s primary concern is to reassert a sense of control, he or she may become aggressive as a way to force others to pay attention.
What causes some people to become friendlier in response to rejection, while others get angry? According to DeWall, even a glimmer of hope for acceptance can make all the difference. In a pair of experiments, he and his colleagues found that students who were accepted by no other participants in group activities behaved more aggressively — feeding hot sauce to partners who purportedly disliked spicy foods, and blasting partners with uncomfortably loud white noise through headphones — than students accepted by just one of the other participants

I see a couple of trends here - non-Redmond campuses are slowly being closed, Research and Security are now second class citizens in the "Platform and Productivity" world
9:33PM - yes non-Americans were laid off. Notable cuts included a brilliant Indian mathematician in Research that the US was lucky to get its hands on. Hope that makes you feel good about America's future.
Is this pretty much the only please on the internet where this gets discussed. is there an alternatvie. Original minimsft not havging any new comments and this having ~10 new commments after last round of layofs make me think that folks took the discussion somewhere else?

Skype in Europe also hit as well in Q1. At the start of the layoffs Skype division was told no firings to be expected... in FY14. Notices handed out first week of September. A few products shut down, others moved over to Redmond. I missed this wave but not waiting for the next one, already interviewing at other companies.
A CEO, 22years veteran young and technically focussed. None thought he would be "Downsizer". Some new joinees of 2014 were the worst hit as upper folks escaped axe. CEO gave hopes to even newly acquired Nokia employees too. Later to be dumped in worst Layoffs the industry has ever seen in near future.
Bought an Xbox One for my kid for Christmas and we tried setting it up yesterday.
That has got to be the very worst out of box experience I have ever had with a product. It took hours from plugging in the device until we were actually able to (barely) play a game.
My kid has 6+ games for the Xbox One and so far he can only play one of them. Everything else hangs or needs to be downloaded or updated in some way that just isn't happening.
Fuck you, Microsoft. You guys have got to be the biggest bunch of jackasses in the industry.
still hearing stories of stealth layoffs. And whole groups and teams being flattened to reduce costs and get rid of higher cost employees all together.
Hoping Mini posts a thread on the recently announced layoffs. I suspect a good portion of the cuts will come from within the US, despite what the Geekwire article relayed.
Devs (and what's left of the QA engineers) in the current combined Windows and Devices org are confused/nervous about these announcements, just hope WinPhone doesn't get chopped completely
Hey Mini, you still around? News of layoffs have been coming for months and now even more in the mobile and sales arena, yet you are quiet. I would have thought this would have generated something worth commenting on by you. Best wishes anyway.
This is what doesn't make it into the Mini-Microsoft blog at http://minimsft.blogspot.com/. Off-topic comments, random topics, etc... just a way for me to easily peel off from there good content that doesn't contribute to a lean, mean, Microsoft-machine. Things are a bit... looser here.
These are sole individual personal points-of-view and the
posts and comments by the participants in no way represent the official
point-of-view of Microsoft or any other organization. This is a
discussion to foster debate and by no means an enactment of
policy-violation. These posts are provided "as-is" with no warranties

Nice effort done by sharing an important information. Download Java Runtime Environment 8.0 build 25 (64-bit) for free.

New fiscal year, new mass layoffs.
Chime in if you're affected.

Windows 10 build 10240, What’s new in it?
By Unknown, at July 20, 2015 at 11:59 PM
Hey Mini, you still around? News of layoffs have been coming for months and now even more in the mobile and sales arena, yet you are quiet. I would have thought this would have generated something worth commenting on by you. Best wishes anyway.
