New H1B Job Postings - New comment on 3,600 Microsoft Shoes Waiting to Drop.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "3,600 Microsoft Shoes Waiting to Drop":

Mini - I understand why people are sensitive about H1B visa holders already working at Microsoft. But, what about new job postings?

Why has Microsoft posted 462 new H1B jobs?
http://www.myvisajobs.com/Visa-Job-Sponsor/Microsoft-356252.htm

How can Microsoft turn their back on qualified people here in the United States? Can't Microsoft call a truce on H1B visas, at least until qualified US applicants have an opportunity to apply?

Your former co-workers lives are being uprooted, children being pulled out of school, ill family members need care and health insurance.

This is the only time in a highly successful 15+ year career that I've had to file an unemployment claim. The economy is in dire condition and this week's record breaking layoffs have overloaded the unemployment system - I had to wait over 45 minutes on the phone to ask a question, and by that time was in tears.

Hiring Managers, I urge you to please seek qualified US Microsoft alumni before posting jobs for H1B workers in far off lands. Your former co-workers, people who are your friends, neighbors, and colleagues, have worked hard and earned the right to a fair chance.

Thank you for your consideration. The job you save may be your own.

(Still in cool-down mode.)

  • Why do people still think Microsoft is a u.s. company? It's a multinational corporation. It makes most of its money overseas, or in selling to other multinational corporations. It has a substantial number of workers in India and China. Microsoft is not some U.S. government entity, U.S. charity, or even company with U.S. customers as their main customers (except perhaps the U.S. government).

Microsoft owes U.S. citizens nothing, except to follow U.S. law.

  • Microsoft benefits by being located in the United States. We provide the physical and social infrastructure for MS to exist. Let's see them locate anywhere else in the world and thrive or for that matter survive.

MS needs to be a good corporate US citizen and give back to the community.

I have lived in Seattle for most of my life and I liked it a lot better when it was a provincial blue collar town. I don't like seeing my hometown overrun with Chinese and Indians. For that matter, I am not too crazy about the huge influx of US citizens that have relocated here either but they deserve a job before any foriegners.

  • Seattle's about 75% white. That's hardly "overrun with Chinese and Indians." And furthermore, you don't have to have pale skin to be an American.

Take your racial intolerance somewhere else. Marysville will welcome you with open arms.

  • Take this from an H1B,
It is NOT about American vs foreign. It is THIS: if you are a US citizen and end up with a bozo boss, you have a number of options, including leaving. If you are an H1B, if you get fired you have to leave the US stat, so you suck it up. What the H1B ruse does, it keeps little bozo psycho empires going, which otherwise would be revolving doors or generate lawsuits.
If you take the number of H1Bs ad a direct measure of system sickness and anti-competence, I cannot agree more. But don't make it a racial issue, that is so off the mark.

  • The shortage of US workers pitch is nonsense. There has never been a shortage of qualified US workers in the field.

See the unemployment graph spike for computer programmers since year 2000.
    http://www.programmersguild.org/docs/h1b_abuses_april2005.html#2)_H-1B_visa_used_to_displace_American_Workers_

Would you expect there to be a job shortage when the IT industry is booming (pre-2000 dotcom bust) or recovering (post-2000 dotcom bust)? So why
have H1B applications trippled in recent years since 2000?
    http://www.myvisajobs.com/Visa-Sponsor/Microsoft/356252.htm

The reason employers use H1B workers is simple economics: supply & demand. When you increase the worker applicaton pool size, wages decrease. And that's
exactly what happened as cost-conscious executive policy started to use more H1B workers.

And your suggestion that US citizens are uneducated is an uneducated taunt with no basis in reality:

  • Mini, we totally understand you need to take a break. With all these happenings in the past few month at Microsoft and in the nation, the future is really uncertain. Redmond is one of the richest zip code in Washington

    http://www.incometaxlist.com/washington-income-tax.htm

and I can see, it could change with time, like Boeing (Renton) was on rich area in WA, now it's Redmond, Bellevue

  • The H-1B visa process is a scam, and it's routinely abused.

For example, I'm a US citizen, laid off from Microsoft in January after years of being abused by MSFT bosses for no good reason. Still working in the group I left? Many H-1B holders, less qualified than myself in terms of technical knowledge, experience, and understanding of the field.

  • The world is getting flat....
Why is US not manufacturing consumer items and importing them from China? Start manufacturing and create jobs? Then US wont remain competitive in the world market.

Another reason being that US offers variety of job opportunities outside Tech field. So Tech/Science does not rank high. Rather Medical field is number one. To fulfill Tech industry demand other people fill in from outside.

  • well Microsoft is one of the biggest companies in the world and they can post 462 new H1B jobs and they would not have any problems at paying for those jobs. For example. I heard that Sildenafil Citrate hired 154 new employees in just one day and they didn't have any impact on its economy
