This is what doesn't make it into the Mini-Microsoft blog at http://minimsft.blogspot.com/. Off-topic comments, random topics, etc... just a way for me to easily peel off from there good content that doesn't contribute to a lean, mean, Microsoft-machine. Things are a bit... looser here.

Can we talk about some weird orgs in IT? A PUM left Microsoft a year ago, from a product group, "to spend more time with family". Very deservedly so, kudos, the system does work. Except that two months later he's a GM in IT and a bunch of people that were reporting to him got about 2-3 levels. I know that no sane hiring manager would hire people from that org without putting them through 15 loops, but still they're getting paid while they're there.
So can we have a discussion and understand what is the mission of an org where a principal architect reports to a dev lead II that reports to a GPM and so on?
Isn't this a bit expensive for a boneyard?
