H1Bs in a Down Economy - New comment on No Layoffs at Microsoft, and a Round-up of other R....

Buzz Lightyear has left a new comment on your post "No Layoffs at Microsoft, and a Round-up of other R...":

The first group to go should be the H1B holders. If they're that good and vital let them work from our office in Bumfaq. I'd like to see Congress nullify all tech-related H1Bs now that the music has stopped. If we can layoff folks who were born and raised here we can't afford to be the world's employer. They do the same thing in India so why not here?

  • Not a good idea, at all. MSFT does, and all US companies should, hire the best and brightest in the world. Sure, MSFT could set up offices in every country from which they recruit but that's just extra facilities costs, HR complexity and communications latency. In addition, not having the so called H1-B'ers here means that they pay taxes to other countries and spend their dollars there too.

The sad fact is that the US does not produce enough REALLY good engineers. Kids are loosing interest in Math and Science and your school system is pretty much a mess and will only get worse by moving tax dollars elsewhere.

Full disclosure: I used to be one but now am a GC'er.

  • no country produces enough good engineers. to get the good ones we have to hire a lot of crap from India, Russia, China, etc

  • H1B is for people with advanced degree. Look on the crap we're bringing in - low level dev, low level test etc..

  • Amen brother,t he H1's should go. They are not the best and brightest, they are lemmings. I work with the lemmings at MSFT and haven't met one that can do anything without being told.

  • It's not about H1B at all.

Who the hell hired crappy coders in the first place?

Is every single American engineer here better than any of the H1Bs? - I don't think so. There are too many "hack" & "won't fix" (which really means unable to fix) in our products and are they all contributed by H1Bs?

"I work with some lemmings" => "H1Bs should go"

I can't believe this kind of logic level will do good to our products.

Wake up! Find the root cause and fix it!

You're NOT safe even all the H1Bs disappear tomorrow.

  • sadly I work with a lot of non-H1B MSFT software engineers who do not have the expertise to write high quality code. It shows in the quality of MSFT products. The problem is in the quality of Math & Science education in the US and the pathetic state of higher education. quality of programmers has nothing to do with H1B or non-H1B. Wake up and stop whining and learn how to code. Look at the ratio of non-H1B PMs to non-H1B devs in MSFT. MSFT should fire half the PMs it has but I am not the first to say that.

  • American jobs for Americans first. It is that simple.
Do famous companies in other countries hire this many foreigners?
If Microsoft wants to move to India, let them do it. Some other great American company will take its place.
Importing foreign labor is bad as it is, but in a bad economy, it is just terrible. This is not about the race or ethnicity of the H-1Bs.

  • If Microsoft were based in a different country it would be hiring just as many foreigners. You simply can't develop and sell software for over $60 billion to the entire world by only employing engineers from one country even if that country is the US.

The moment you become protectionist and stop hiring from all over the world the stock will tank, the product quality will go down and you'll see fierce competition from other companies (US and non-US).

You have an office to go to everyday because Microsoft is permamentely scouting bright talent worldwide.
