So tell me: why does Microsoft have to become a major player in the online world?

Well, if you had been reading any of the threads instead of being your usual asinine self, you'd already know that the publicly announced reason is the second one you listed.

As for "what makes it think that Yahoo can grow in that space with MS running Yahoo?", that is what the rest of us would like to know too.
